8:15 – 9:05 a.m. Integrated Pest Management
In this session we will assess how Bartlett utilizes diagnostics to correctly identify pests and how that can lead to more consistent and successful pest management . We'll also discuss some of the tools and approaches to plant health care in residential landscapes and how to frame IPM in the context of these environments.
Jeremy Slone PhD, Entomological Researcher, Bartlett Tree Experts
Jeremy completed his graduate degrees at NC State studying barriers to IPM adoption as well as the integration of pest and pollinator management practices for crop production. He spent several years identifying pests and pathogens of landscape plants from around North America in the Bartlett Diagnostic clinic before moving into an Entomological research and support role in 2022.
9:10 – 10:00 a.m. Arboriculture Practices for Tree Establishment
In this session we will discuss the importance of correcting defects in root bound plants before planting. We will discuss a live research trial where trees were planted with different corrective treatments applied to the root ball at time of planting. We will also cover the importance of proper structural pruning on young trees.
Casey Paulk, Regional Lab Extension Specialist, Bartlett Tree Experts & NCUFC Board Member
Casey Paulk is a professional horticulturist/arborist with a bachelor’s degree from NC State in Horticulture Science. He has more than ten years of experience working in Raleigh, NC, at Bartlett Tree Experts, and is an International Society of Arborist (ISA) Certified Arborist/Tree Risk Assessor. He specializes in plant health care and training new specialists.
Elden LeBrun, Research Technician, Bartlett Tree Experts
Elden LeBrun is a research technician at Bartlett Tree Experts Research Laboratory, a position he
has held since 2000. In addition to offering clients with research support and general arboriculture assistance, he provides training in integrated pest management. Since joining Bartlett Tree Experts in 1978, Elden has also worked as a climber, crew leader, and PHC Specialist. He received his Associate’s Degree in Forest Technology from Alleghany College of Maryland and is both an ISA Certified Arborist and a Certified Treecare Safety Professional through the Tree Care Industry Association.
10:15 – 12:00 p.m. Chainsaw Practices, PPE, and Arboriculture Safety
Husqvarna professionals will be demonstrating proper safety practices and personal protective equipment when working with chainsaws for arboriculture. They will also showcase tool care for common tools utilized in tree care.
Rick Martineau, Senior Training Specialist, Husqvarna
Rick Martineau is a professional educator for Husqvarna, teaching about high power tools and techniques for Husqvarna Group with an associate’s degree from University of New Hampshire in Forest Technology and a bachelor’s degree from Keen State College in Secondary Education. He has worked with Husqvarna as a safety educator since 2017 following his time as an agricultural educator in New Hampshire.
